VSAT Vilnius Border Guard officers intercepted a vehicle at the state border crossing between Lithuania and Latvia on Friday. The stop occurred on the Daugpilis-Rokiškis-Panevėžys road, near the village of Pasubatė in the Rokiškis district. The stopped vehicle was a Nissan NV200 equipped with Estonian license plates.
The vehicle was being operated by a 55-year-old Estonian citizen. Upon inspection, border guard personnel found that the passengers inside were unable to provide any identification or citizenship documents. The individuals claimed to be citizens of Eritrea, a nation in East Africa, and were reported to be between 20 and 24 years old.
Following the discovery, VSAT officers detained both the driver and the passengers. The Estonian citizen was subsequently transported to a detention center, while the undocumented migrants were housed at a nearby Vilnius Border Guard post. Authorities stated that the intervention was initiated because the group was suspected of unlawfully transporting people across the state border for unauthorized purposes.
The border guard officers acted in response to what they deemed an illegal cross-border transit operation. The incident highlights ongoing border security efforts to prevent irregular migration and human trafficking across the region’s frontiers.
