In response to the decisions of the Ministry of Justice, LGBTQ+ activists will hold a protest action

Human rights advocates issued a statement on Tuesday, alleging that the leadership of the Ministry of Justice is intentionally impeding necessary legal proceedings and fostering an environment of homophobia. During a press conference, organizers announced plans for a significant demonstration. The planned action is a protest scheduled for Saturday, coinciding with the annual LGBTQ+ marches in Vilnius.

As part of the demonstration, participants intend to display pink triangles—symbols historically associated with homosexual individuals in Nazi Germany—at the Ministry building. Speakers at the conference emphasized the critical nature of the current year’s “LT Pride” amid what they described as a challenging political climate. They stated that the fundamental principle of human rights should not be treated as a negotiable issue.

The organizers expressed their expectation that on June 6, a substantial turnout of approximately 20,000 members of the LGBTQ+ community and their supporters will gather. They asserted that the current pattern of delaying required legislative changes will necessitate accountability. The statements underscore a deep concern regarding the perceived inaction from the government body and the Ministry of Justice concerning LGBTQ+ rights.

  1. It will be interesting to see how the activists’ protest addresses the specific legal concerns raised by the Ministry of Justice.
