In Russia, there is a proposal to persecute critics abroad: they propose to punish for “Russophobia”

During a recent address, V. Makarov noted that several European nations have established criminal liability for violations related to sanctions regimes. According to the official, this development necessitates the implementation of reciprocal measures from the Russian side.

As potential forms of retaliation, Makarov stated that Russia could introduce several new instruments. The measures outlined include extending confiscation procedures, freezing financial assets, revoking necessary permits and licenses, suspending operational activities within the Russian Federation, and restricting access to state services. Furthermore, Makarov emphasized the consideration of criminalizing assistance from foreign entities that implement state decisions perceived as being directed against Russian interests.

He argued that it is necessary for the legal framework to establish clear categories for actions deemed hostile or unfriendly to Russia. Regarding general economic difficulties, Makarov reiterated the need to introduce robust countermeasures. These proposed instruments mirror the initial suggestions, encompassing property confiscation, fund freezing, license cancellation, operational suspension, and limitations on state service access.

The statement underscores a policy shift toward implementing reciprocal legal and economic actions in response to international regulatory actions taken against the country.
