The Šiauliai Regional Police Office reported multiple instances of theft targeting public infrastructure across the city in early 2026. Two separate incidents detailed significant material losses. On April 30 and June 4, 2026, thieves were responsible for the theft of 14 wellhead covers and one well screen from various locations throughout Šiauliai, spanning 15 different addresses.
These thefts resulted in an estimated property damage totaling 4,142.50 euros for the wastewater treatment company. An ongoing pre-trial investigation has been initiated to pursue charges related to this material theft. A separate incident involving railway infrastructure was reported on June 3.
Authorities discovered that three sections of railway tracks had been stolen from a picket at the Zokniai railway station in Šiauliai. This particular act of theft caused property damage amounting to 330 euros for the railway company. Police authorities are treating both incidents as criminal matters.
The accumulated losses highlight ongoing concerns regarding the security of essential municipal and transport utilities. The police investigation remains active to identify and apprehend those responsible for the removal of these valuable and necessary components.
