A study published in the journal Nature Aging indicates that certain cancer cells surviving chemotherapy can signal neighboring cancer cells, thereby facilitating their spread. Researchers suggest this discovery reveals a previously unidentified mechanism by which residual cancer cells promote the metastatic behavior of the disease. According to Aidan Cole, a collaborator with the Wistar Institute in Philadelphia and a leader on the study, the surviving cancer cells may not be actively dividing, yet they retain significant biological activity.
Cole explained that these residual cells continue to secrete specific molecules that transmit signals to adjacent cells. The research highlights the role of environmental factors in cancer progression. Cole noted that the study represents one of the first instances demonstrating that a nutrient, in this case, a dietary component, can function as a signal directed toward nearby cells.
This suggests that the signaling environment surrounding the tumor plays a critical role in determining the spread of the cancer. The findings emphasize that the process of cancer spread is not solely dependent on the physical division of malignant cells. Instead, the biochemical communication between cells appears to be a key driver.
Understanding how these signaling molecules are transmitted—particularly those derived from nutrients—could offer new targets for developing therapies aimed at inhibiting cancer cell communication and slowing the spread of the disease.
