During a press conference held on Wednesday, D. Tuskevičius detailed the scope of the integrated railway network (ZSK) development project. The initiative involves significant infrastructure expansion, projecting the construction of 4,700 kilometers of new railway track.
This newly developed track segment is strategically divided to accommodate different operational needs. A portion measuring 2,700 kilometers is designated for high-speed rail services, engineered to support speeds reaching up to 350 km/h. The remaining 2,000 kilometers of new track are allocated for standard, regular rolling stock operations.
In addition to new construction, the project encompasses a substantial modernization effort across existing infrastructure, amounting to 5,600 kilometers of railway track that will undergo upgrades. Tuskevičius stated that the scale of the undertaking positions the resulting railway network as a leading modern system in Europe. The development aims to overhaul and enhance connectivity across the region through these comprehensive additions and upgrades to the existing rail infrastructure.
This massive investment in track capacity and technological advancement is central to improving the overall efficiency and capacity of the national transport network.
