The Lithuanian Court of Appeal rejected the appeal filed by a local council member on Wednesday. This ruling finalized the judgment, resulting in the loss of the council member’s mandate. Previously, the Šiauliai District Court had sentenced the politician.
The judgment included a fine of 8,000 euros, alongside a criminal sanction that prohibits the individual from holding elected or appointed positions within leading state or municipal institutions, or related enterprises, for a period of three years. The charges stem from allegations that the former director of the administration of the Radviliškis district, J. Margaitienė, misappropriated funds from the municipality when she concluded her employment.
Furthermore, the court required the member to compensate the municipality for damages exceeding 1,000 euros. The proceedings also addressed other political matters, dismissing a proposal suggesting a referendum on nuclear weapons as a form of political performance rather than legitimate opposition. The final decision by the appellate court solidifies the penalties handed down by the lower court.
The legal action underscores the judiciary’s role in addressing alleged misconduct within local governance structures. The outcome confirms that the council member faces immediate removal from office due to the accumulated legal penalties imposed by the various court levels.
