J. Olekas: Defense funding should not decrease next year, even if some savings are made this year

J. Olekas stated that the necessity for certain measures remains evident. Speaking to Eltai, he reported engaging in political meetings with allied nations, noting that these partners, including Germany and the United States, value Lithuania’s current approach.

He emphasized that the allocated funding is instrumental in enabling this support from allies, as they recognize the efforts made by our nation. Regarding national defense spending, the Speaker of the Seimas explained that the disbursement of funds is contingent upon the duration of the procurement and supply chains. Consequently, the majority of expenditures are typically realized during the latter half of the year.

According to Olekas, the process of absorbing funds requires significant time, spanning from the formal signing of contracts to the actual delivery of necessary goods. He added that he believes the Ministry of Defense (MOD) is overseeing these processes with considerable diligence. He concluded that, generally, defense spending tends to accumulate more funds in the second half and towards the end of the fiscal year, rather than at the beginning.
