During a broadcast on LRT radio on Wednesday, J. Taminskas addressed criticisms regarding the condition of motorways, acknowledging that the infrastructure has deteriorated, particularly following winter weather. He stated that significant rebuilding efforts are currently underway to address these issues.
The state road operator, Via Lietuva, has announced plans to complete about 100 kilometers of road by the end of the current year. A substantial portion of this work, exceeding 64 kilometers, will focus on the critical A1 (Vilnius-Kaunas-Klaipėda) and A2 (Vilnius-Panevėžys) highways. According to the minister, the current schedule aims for the full completion of both major highways by 2028.
This extensive renovation project is designed to improve the road’s condition index, moving it from yellow or red ratings to a green status. Achieving this green rating requires installing ideal upper and bottom layers across the designated sections. Taminskas also touched upon the relationship between vehicle capabilities and infrastructure, noting that while vehicles are technically improving, the state of the roads remains a critical factor in overall travel efficiency.
The ongoing investment in upgrading the physical state of the motorways is intended to ensure that the roadways can support modern travel demands and maintain safe operational speeds for the public.
