Financial Times sources indicate that Elon Musk does not appear to object to the potential use of Starlink technology within Ukrainian drones operating outside of Ukrainian borders. However, Musk reportedly emphasized that the ultimate decision regarding such authorization must be made by the US administration. Previously, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reached out to the owner of SpaceX requesting permission to deploy Starlink-equipped drones.
These drones are intended for strikes targeting Russian ballistic missile launch facilities situated up to 200 kilometers from the Ukrainian border. Currently, Starlink terminals are utilized extensively by Ukrainian military forces along the front lines. The satellite communication service is critical because it maintains internet access in areas where conventional communication infrastructure has been damaged or is nonexistent.
Furthermore, it enables command posts to receive video feeds from drones and facilitate the exchange of vital operational information. The reported stance suggests that while the technology is deemed valuable for Ukrainian defense efforts, its expanded use beyond current operational parameters requires high-level governmental approval. Musk’s apparent flexibility, coupled with the strategic importance of Starlink to the Ukrainian military, places the decision for further operational scope squarely with US authorities.
