The Anykščiai district is currently experiencing significant disruptions following severe weather, with reports indicating that a majority of the area is without electricity. Amid the challenging circumstances, local officials have sought external assistance from national authorities. In response to the situation, the mayor of the Anykščiai district publicly addressed the need for increased support.
Following the allocation of resources, the mayor stated that the initial aid was insufficient, leading to a formal request for additional military personnel and equipment from the Ministry of National Defence. Official support has been provided, with the acting Minister of National Defence, Martynas Katėnas, issuing an order that allocates four soldiers and two vehicles, complete with crews, to the district. In addition to this, the mayor has also communicated directly with the Minister of National Defence, Robertas Kaunas, both via telephone and through written applications, to secure further aid.
The need for assistance has drawn broader scrutiny. The power outage and the subsequent handling of the crisis have prompted criticism from President G. Nausėda and representatives from the Energy Distribution Operator (ESO).
