K. Vaitiekūnas: the problem of housing supply hinders the reduction of the gap between Vilnius and the regions

According to K. Vaitiekūnas, a significant challenge is emerging in attracting workers to developing regions, despite the increasing establishment of well-paying jobs in these areas. The core obstacle identified is the inadequate supply of suitable housing.

Vaitiekūnas noted that while businesses are creating desirable employment opportunities in the regions, the existing residential infrastructure often proves insufficient. He highlighted that much of the current housing stock consists of older apartment buildings or outdated houses, a condition that reportedly discourages potential incoming workers. Furthermore, the trend of using summer homes as permanent, year-round residences is becoming more common.

Addressing this gap, the Temporary Finance Minister pointed to affordable housing and land plots along the coast as potential solutions. In the immediate term, efforts to stabilize the housing market are being undertaken through institutional support. Specifically, the National Development Bank is currently assisting in resolving the shortage by facilitating the construction of municipality-built housing.

These initiatives are crucial for meeting the growing demand for adequate residential supply as economic development continues to draw investment into peripheral regions.
