M. Sinkevičius promises higher pensions: will the billion-euro “Sodros” reserve be opened for this?

Speaking to journalists on Friday, M. Sinkevičius stated that he would not announce any potential policy changes. He acknowledged that the indexation of the pension system is linked to overall economic growth.

While conceding that an increase is expected, he cautioned against speculation regarding the correlation between this increase and the utilization of the SODRA reserve. “I won’t improvise,” he said, maintaining a guarded stance on the matter. The discussion surrounding the potential use of the state reserve was reignited following the implementation of the recent pension reform.

This reform saw two-fifths of participants withdraw their accumulated funds during the second stage, leading to state subsidies being redirected back into the SODRA reserve. Contextually, the state budget registered a notable increase in average pension payouts this year, with growth reaching 12%, depending on the individual’s length of service. Current figures indicate that the average old-age pension stands at 750 euros, while the minimum pension amount is set at 810 euros.

Sinkevičius’s comments emphasized the link between economic indicators and future pension adjustments, while firmly limiting his remarks to established facts rather than projections involving the reserve funds.
