Major Bioarchaeological Study Shines New Light on the Lives of Vilnius’ Past Residents

According to Prof. Dr. Rimantas Jankauskas, the Head of the Centre for Human Bioarchaeology and Palaeogenetics at VUMF, the current research initiative represents a significant undertaking, both within Lithuania and on the international stage.

He noted that the scale of the resulting databases is exceptional, even by global standards, positioning the collected data as an important resource for researchers both domestically and abroad. This comprehensive project draws upon expertise from several academic institutions. The core research team is comprised of staff members from the Centre, including Associate Professor Dr.

Žydrūnė Miliauskienė, Dr. Justina Kozakaitė, and doctoral student Rūta Brindzaitė. Complementing this group are specialists from the VU Faculty of History, represented by Prof.

Dr. Giedrė Motuzaitė Matuzevičiūtė Keen, and from the Institute of the History of Lithuania, namely Dr. Irma Kaplūnaitė and Dr.

Rytis Jonaitis. Furthermore, the technical execution of the study involved specialized data analysis. This was managed by Prof.

Dr. Audronė Jakaitienė, alongside a master’s student. The collaborative nature of the team, spanning bioarchaeology, palaeogenetics, and historical research, underscores the multidisciplinary depth of the project.

The Centre’s leadership emphasizes that the combined efforts of these researchers are making a vital contribution to the understanding of human history through advanced scientific methodologies.
