Maltese children’s day centers: safe homes after school and encouragement to grow

The Maltan Children’s Aid Network operates across several locations in Lithuania, providing comprehensive support for children and young people. Their services encompass fifteen day centers and youth day homes in Kaunas. Additionally, they manage an open youth space in Vyžuonos, situated in the Utena district.

The network also offers support services for older youth transitioning toward independent living in Kaunas, Marijampolė, and Telšiai. According to Maltan general secretary Edvinas Regelskis, the effectiveness of these services is measured not by the sheer number of facilities, but by their strategic placement and timely availability when assistance is most required. Regelskis noted that the Maltan experience demonstrates that there is no universal solution, as every community and group of children presents unique needs.

Therefore, Maltan intervenes when local communities are prepared to collaborate in establishing a safe environment for the youth. Highlighting their expansion, Regelskis announced that three new day centers have opened this year in the towns of Prienai, Telšiai, and Šiluva. These ongoing efforts underscore the network’s commitment to meeting diverse and evolving local needs across Lithuania’s various regions.
