Many people still associate burnout with work: what signs indicate this condition?

Family doctor Julija Skirmantė of the Health Decision Center “Antėja” notes that while burnout is often associated with professional environments, its origins can extend beyond the workplace. According to the doctor, the condition can manifest domestically, frequently occurring while an individual is engaged in caregiving roles for others. Skirmantė draws a key distinction between typical fatigue and burnout.

She explains that standard fatigue tends to appear following intensive activity and subsides with adequate rest. Conversely, burnout requires a prolonged period to develop, and the symptoms do not improve substantially even after rest. The doctor observes that individuals often fail to recognize the initial warning signs, sometimes dismissing them as mere temporary tiredness.

She points out that burnout usually affects high-stress professions, such as teaching, nursing, and social work. According to Skirmantė, early indicators of the condition can include sleep disturbances, heightened irritability, emotional flatness, persistent low energy levels, and a growing desire to withdraw from one’s environment. Crucially, unlike temporary fatigue, these symptoms associated with burnout do not resolve with rest.

The doctor emphasizes that recognizing these patterns early is vital for diagnosis and management, as the condition involves a sustained depletion that requires professional attention.
