Marijampolė Mayor P. Isoda is sentenced in the “chips” case, loses his position(3)

The Lithuanian Court of Appeal has annulled a previously issued exonerating judgment concerning the mayor of Marijampolė. In the new ruling, the mayor was found guilty of abuse, fraud, and document forgery, and subsequently fined 10,000 euros. The three judges determined that the mayor’s actions inflicted significant financial and non-financial damage upon the municipality, thereby diminishing public trust in self-governing institutions.

Furthermore, the court’s judgment stripped the mayor of the right to work in public service for a period of three years. This verdict was declared immediately effective. The ruling necessitates immediate administrative action.

The Supreme Election Commission (SEC) must now terminate the mayor’s powers prematurely, and the municipal council is tasked with electing a temporary replacement. While some parties, including I. Šimonytė, addressed procedural questions regarding the defense, the focus of the proceedings centered on the findings of misconduct.

The legal outcome establishes a clear finding of culpability against the mayor. The implications of this judgment are substantial, affecting both the individual’s professional standing and the immediate governance structure of Marijampolė. The SEC has been directed to act promptly to ensure continuity of local administration following the court’s decisive judgment.
