Media: R. Kaunas did not renew professional military service for a soldier who testified in V. Rupšio case

Last autumn, Lieutenant Colonel Neris Rimkevičius, the Commander of the Lithuanian Army’s Regional Military Command of Klaipėda, submitted an official request to the Minister of Defense, Robertas Kaunas, seeking a four-year extension of his service term. According to statements from the soldier, Minister Kaunas declined the request, citing that the grounds for the extension were insufficient. The dispute continued when the soldier appealed his case to R.

Kaunas again this February. In correspondence to the Minister, Rimkevičius contended that the handling of the case suggested a pattern of targeting personnel. He wrote that the situation appeared to demonstrate that the KAM was addressing soldiers who attempted to disclose alleged corrupt or unfair actions committed by high-ranking officials within the KAM and LK.

The exchange highlights a significant professional disagreement regarding military service tenure and internal oversight. Rimkevičius’s communication to Kaunas frames the denial not merely as an administrative decision, but as a response to whistleblowing efforts. The core contention centers on whether the refusal to grant the extension was based solely on procedural grounds or if it was linked to the soldier’s willingness to expose misconduct within the military command structure.
