Million-strong cities are suffocating with smoke: Canada is being ravaged by uncontrollable fires, and residents have to be evacuated

Air quality deteriorated significantly across several U.S. states near the Canadian border, including Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, and Illinois. Noticeable declines in air quality were also reported in the Northeast, particularly in New York.

On Thursday evening, the IQAir air quality monitoring service identified Chicago and Detroit as among the world’s most polluted cities, with Detroit ranking closely behind. The most populous U.S. city was reported to be covered in smoke, leading state authorities to issue warnings.

These warnings highlighted that fine particulate matter poses a health risk to all residents of the New York metropolitan area and Long Island. Concerns regarding the overall air environment were raised by scientists, who noted that the effects of rapidly melting Greenland glaciers could potentially impact Europe. Furthermore, the deterioration of air quality was observed across the central and western states, prompting state authorities to issue specific advisories for those regions.

The consistent reports indicate widespread atmospheric concerns affecting multiple geographical areas, from the Midwest to the Northeast.
