More bodies: reports on the number of earthquake victims in Venezuela has risen again

Venezuela is grappling with compounding crises following a series of powerful earthquakes and escalating civil unrest. On Wednesday evening, the nation experienced two significant seismic events in quick succession, with quakes registering magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5. These tremors caused widespread structural damage, leading to the collapse of buildings across northern Venezuelan districts, including the coastal city of La Guaira, located near the capital, Caracas.

International aid efforts are currently underway to support the affected areas. In the wake of the disaster, humanitarian concerns are paramount. According to Tom Fletcher, the UN deputy humanitarian affairs and emergency relief coordinator, reports indicate that over 50,000 people have gone missing without a trace.

Recovery efforts are focused on locating survivors and accounting for the missing bodies. The crisis is further complicated by political tensions. Temporary President Delcy Rodriguez faced public criticism from residents of Caracas during a visit to a devastated district, contributing to growing public frustration regarding the official response to the disaster.

Since Friday evening, border access has been restricted, limiting the flow of necessary resources. Authorities are managing the situation as more international aid arrives. The combination of natural devastation, infrastructural failure, and civil tension presents a significant challenge for national recovery efforts.
