The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) has released updated figures detailing the current spread of infections across several European nations. According to the data, Italy has reported the highest number of cases, totaling 139. Other notable outbreaks were recorded in Greece, which reported 61 cases, and Spain, with 17 reported cases.
North Macedonia contributed 13 cases to the overall tally. In addition to these figures, smaller numbers of cases were documented across other member states, including 6 cases in Romania, 4 in France, and 1 in Germany. Overall, the ECDC has identified 59 distinct areas across Europe that have been affected.
Analysis of the geographic spread indicates that more than half of these affected areas—specifically 36—are situated within Italy, with the northern regions showing the highest concentration of activity. However, the ECDC issued a caution, emphasizing that these statistics do not represent a complete picture of the disease’s circulation. Compounding this advisory, the World Health Organization (WHO) has recently issued a call for heightened vigilance.
This increased concern stems from a series of West Nile virus infections being monitored across Southern Europe, prompting health authorities to remain on alert regarding potential escalation in transmission rates.
