Honeysuckle berries are regarded as highly valuable, sometimes termed “superfoods,” yet growers observe that many Lithuanian consumers remain unaware of their potential. To increase awareness, producers are encouraging the public to sample the berries and incorporate them into simple recipes. Julia Butkevic, who leads the Fruit and Vegetables Purchase Department at “Maximos,” reports that Lithuanian honeysuckle berries have steadily gained popularity in recent years.
Customers are reportedly drawn to the berries’ distinct flavor, high quality, freshness, and reasonable pricing. The supply of these berries to the Lithuanian retail chain comes from “Haskap.lt,” a farm managed by Agnė Vaitiekūnaitė, located in the Raseinių district. She explained that while the edible honeysuckle shrub has been known for a long time, cultivation of the berries in Lithuania began approximately ten years ago.
The plant in question is a berry-bearing shrub whose beneficial properties are not universally recognized. While the specific type mentioned, “Sausmedis,” is noted as a northern Asian plant, the local honeysuckle berries offer unique culinary potential. While other popular berries like the blueberry are well-known, the unique profile of the honeysuckle berry presents a distinct alternative.
Consumers are increasingly encouraged to explore how these local berries can enhance their diet and cooking.
