Latest Eurostat data confirms a pattern regarding the disposal of old electronic devices across the European Union in 2024. The statistics highlight significant amounts of electronics being kept at home rather than properly recycled. For mobile phones and smartphones, the data indicates that over half (51%) of the EU population aged 16 to 74 will keep their old phones at home.
Only 11% will hand them over to waste collectors, while a mere 2% will be discarded outright. Similar trends are observed concerning the valuable raw materials contained in other electronic equipment. When considering laptops and tablets, a third (34%) of EU citizens are expected to keep their old units at home.
Among these, 12% will sell or give away the devices, while 11% will hand them over to waste collectors, and 1% will dispose of them without proper recycling. The disposal rates for desktop computers show a slightly higher recycling rate, with 15% of the population expected to hand these devices over to waste collectors. These figures underscore the scale of e-waste management challenges.
The data reveals that for a substantial portion of the population, old electronics remain in the home environment, pointing to areas where improved recycling infrastructure and public awareness regarding devices are necessary to maximize resource recovery.
