The Lithuanian National Cyber Security Center (NKSC), in collaboration with the Second Operational Services Department (AOTD) and the State Security Department (VSD), has issued updated guidelines advising the public on how to protect against sophisticated attempts to compromise accounts on popular messaging platforms, including Signal and WhatsApp. In a recent report, NKSC director Antanas Aleknavičius highlighted that the evolving nature of cyber threats means attackers are increasingly targeting users through social engineering rather than exploiting vulnerabilities within the applications themselves. He noted that cybercriminals are leveraging artificial intelligence, publicly available data, and human trust to execute these schemes.
According to the NKSC, the most prevalent threat remains phishing attacks. In these scenarios, scammers impersonate official support services or trusted acquaintances to trick users into divulging sensitive information. Aleknavičius stressed that modern cybersecurity requires users to adopt a critical mindset when evaluating incoming communications.
He warned against making decisions based on manufactured feelings of urgency. The central takeaway from the advisory is that vigilance and skepticism regarding unsolicited messages are the primary lines of defense against malicious takeover attempts. The agencies urge the public to remain highly cautious and verify the authenticity of any requests for personal data received through messaging services.
