An organization has issued a statement emphasizing that the Minister of Justice does not enforce court decisions concerning partnership registration. According to the group, the implementation of these rulings is currently impeded by ongoing appeals to higher courts. Jūratė Juškaitė, director of the Lithuanian Human Rights Center, stated that the Minister’s actions establish a concerning precedent.
She argued that the Ministry of Justice, an institution whose primary role is to strengthen the rule of law, is instead becoming a significant obstacle to the execution of judicial mandates and constitutional principles. Juškaitė expressed concerns that the Ministry’s actions suggest a lack of neutrality in its defense of democracy and the Constitution. These non-governmental organizations report that Lithuanian courts have already recognized partnerships in numerous instances, amounting to several dozen cases.
However, these rulings are reportedly not being fully implemented, with some cases remaining under appeal. The central concern raised is the gap between judicial recognition and practical enforcement. The organization highlighted that the Minister’s perceived inaction suggests that the mandate of justice is being undermined.
The statement focused specifically on the fact that the Minister’s authority is not being used to ensure that court decisions are upheld, despite the established legal rulings.
