Border Guard officers from the VSAT Varėna Border Guard District, operating under the command of Gintaras Žagunis, conducted a seizure on Monday in the Dailidžiai village, located within the Šalčininkų district near the state border with Belarus. During routine patrols, officers stopped a man who was operating an electric motorcycle, specifically a “CityCoco Electric Harley,” on a forest road. The individual, identified as a 31-year-old resident of the Šalčininkai district, had a prior record of being fined for the unlawful possession of excise goods.
On this occasion, authorities discovered two bags wrapped in clear polyethylene film. Inside these bags were 1,000 packs of “NZ Gold” cigarettes bearing Belarusian banderoles. The total assessed value of the seized tobacco, including all requisite taxes payable in Lithuania, amounted to 5,510 euros.
The seizure highlighted a pattern of illicit trade, as this marked the 45th recorded shipment of smuggled tobacco this year, with previous shipments even involving air balloons. Furthermore, border guards determined that the operation was organized, and they also confiscated a substantial amount of cash from the suspects. The incident underscores ongoing efforts by border authorities to intercept illegal cross-border trade within the district.
