Professor J. V. Vaitkus demonstrated early recognition of the potential of laser technology across several scientific fields, including optoelectronics, nanotechnology, and the application of semiconductor sensors.
This pioneering insight was instrumental in establishing and developing Lithuanian scientific cooperation with CERN. In addition to his foundational contributions to semiconductor research, Professor Vaitkus’s work helped advance the application of these advanced sensors within the context of large-scale international physics research at CERN. His scientific career left a significant impact on the field.
Following his passing, a report acknowledged the profound influence of Professor Vaitkus, describing him as an insightful scientist and dedicated educator. In remembrance of his life’s work, he left behind the autobiography, Year of Light. Memories (2025).
A farewell service honoring Professor Vaitkus will be held at the chapel of St. John (St. John Street 12, Vilnius) on Sunday.
