Researchers from three Lithuanian universities—LSMU, VU, and VDU—along with the Center for Digital Ethics, have initiated a study to investigate the factors influencing engagement with video games. The project seeks to answer complex questions regarding the underlying causes of varying levels of involvement in digital gaming. According to a recent press release, the research aims to determine the biological and psychological components associated with internet gaming habits.

Dr. Paulina Vaitkienė, a geneticist and researcher at LSMU who is leading the study, stated that the investigation will explore the interplay between several factors. Specifically, the research intends to map how genetic predispositions, individual personality traits, and emotional well-being correlate with how frequently and deeply individuals participate in games.

The study invites both video game players and the general adult population in Lithuania to participate. The objective is comprehensive: to understand what drives differing levels of immersion in virtual worlds. The investigation places significant emphasis on genetics, examining how an individual’s genes might influence their behavioral patterns concerning interactive media.

Beyond genetics, the researchers are also assessing psychological profiles to build a clearer picture of the relationship between mental state and gaming behavior. Dr. Vaitkienė noted that while the scientific goal is to uncover these causal links, the participation offers a unique educational opportunity for the subjects themselves.
