Early Wednesday evening, officers from the VSAT Vilnius Border Guard Detachment’s Criminal Intelligence Department were conducting an investigation concerning a reported stolen Toyota RAV4. During their efforts, the guards located the vehicle within the underground parking facility of a shopping center in Vilnius. A 26-year-old resident of Vilnius was found operating the compact SUV, which bore Norwegian license plates.
Upon initial inspection, the border guards noted discrepancies, leading them to suspect that the identification code (VIN), the driver’s Norwegian registration certificate, and the vehicle’s stated VIN were all fraudulent. The officers proceeded to verify the vehicle’s details, successfully determining the SUV’s actual VIN and identifying the legitimate state registration number belonging to the vehicle’s registered owner. In addition to the investigation into the stolen property, the officers managed a separate incident involving an intoxicated individual.
The situation required the assistance of local residents, who unexpectedly aided the border personnel. It was later confirmed that the individual involved was a Dutch national. The combined operations highlighted the vigilance of the border authorities.
The successful recovery of the vehicle and the subsequent investigation into the forged documentation underscore the ongoing efforts of the border security teams to maintain order and combat illicit activities within the region. The actions taken by the guards demonstrated their comprehensive investigative capabilities in the heart of Vilnius.
