Police in Tauragė district found contraband possibly brought in by balloons from Belarus

During routine checks, officials noted several large boxes situated in both the salon area and the luggage compartment of a vehicle. Although the initial situation did not appear unusual, further inspection revealed a substantial smuggling operation. Authorities subsequently discovered a large-scale cache of contraband goods.

The inspection uncovered approximately 40 boxes containing a total of 20,000 packs of cigarettes. These cigarettes were identifiable by the tobacco tax stamps belonging to the Republic of Belarus. Preliminary assessments indicate that the value of the entire shipment, particularly the cigarettes not marked with Lithuanian governmental models, is estimated to be around 100,000 euros.

The discovery highlights an organized effort to move illicit goods across borders. Investigators are currently examining the logistics of the shipment, as they do not rule out the possibility that this contraband was transported into Lithuania using unconventional methods, such as hot air balloons. The incident underscores ongoing efforts by border control agencies to intercept illegal trade.

The sheer volume of the contraband cigarettes and their foreign markings suggest a sophisticated smuggling network. Authorities are continuing their investigation to determine the full scope of the operation and the individuals responsible for smuggling the goods.
