More broadly, the region has experienced significant population movement; by the end of July, an estimated 80,000 migrants arrived in Ceuta following a large influx from Morocco. Official reports confirm at least 96 fatalities associated with these crossings. While the majority of the individuals have since returned, thousands remain in Ceuta.
Politically, the conservative opposition in Spain has publicly advocated for the immediate repatriation of these individuals.
