Signals of danger in Ukraine: the heat wave that has been ravaging Europe is approaching, electricity will have to be limited

A significant heat wave recently impacted Western Europe, with temperatures reaching record highs across the continent. The extreme weather placed considerable strain on infrastructure across the region, which many areas were not equipped to handle, particularly given the limited widespread use of air conditioning. This strain was acutely felt by hospitals, transportation networks, and electrical grids.

According to the UN health agency, the continent has recorded over 1,300 excess deaths since June 21st, directly linked to the extreme heat. Among the fatalities reported are vulnerable groups, including young children and adolescents who succumbed to heat-related incidents, such as being left locked in vehicles or drowning in unsupervised swimming areas. The impact on public safety has been severe regionally.

France, for instance, reported at least 74 drowning incidents since June 18th, while Poland alone documented 17 drownings on a single Sunday. In response to the sustained period of high temperatures, residents throughout Europe are reportedly modifying their travel and holiday plans. The necessity of mitigating the risks associated with the intense heat is prompting shifts in traditional leisure activities and travel itineraries across the continent.
