State Control: More than half of special needs students do not receive all the necessary help

An audit conducted for the 2024-2025 academic year revealed significant disparities in the educational support provided to children with Special Educational Needs (SUP). While 94% of these children were enrolled in general schools, the audit found that a substantial 56% did not receive the necessary support within those settings. Furthermore, an additional 5% of the affected children reported receiving no educational support whatsoever.

Irena Segalovičienė, the state inspector, highlighted that mere attendance at general schools does not guarantee adequate education. She emphasized that ensuring every child receives timely and appropriate support is crucial. Segalovičienė noted that the current situation leaves many families struggling without sufficient institutional aid.

She expressed concern that the right of a child to a comprehensive education should not become dependent on a child’s geographical location. According to the inspector, the variation in support provided across different municipalities is unacceptable. Moreover, she pointed out that even when academic qualifications are obtained, these diplomas do not consistently guarantee entry into the labor market.

Following the completion of this audit, Segalovičienė stated that the identified systemic issues would be addressed to improve the support structure for these children.
