Renovation work is underway on a key underground passage, a project deemed necessary due to the advanced state of the existing infrastructure. According to Aloyzas Pakalniškis, head of the City Management Department of Kaunas Municipality, the current condition of the passage’s staircases, walls, ceilings, and floors exhibits significant wear, including visible cracks, scratches, and accumulated water damage. The scope of the revitalization effort includes comprehensive refurbishment of the steps, walls, ceilings, and floors within the underground structure located on Vilnius street.
Furthermore, the contractors plan to upgrade the flooring entirely, installing new light gray granite material designed to be smooth and non-slippery for public safety. During the execution of these improvements, contractors will implement traffic restrictions on Birštono street, limiting vehicular flow to a minimum. Despite the construction activity within the city, residents will maintain access to the underground passage throughout the capital reconstruction period.
Temporary closures will only occur for exceptional circumstances, and the contractors commit to providing advance notice regarding any such restrictions. This comprehensive renovation aims to restore the passage to modern standards, ensuring continued usability for the community while minimizing disruption to the daily life of the Kaunas city residents. The ongoing work reflects the municipality’s commitment to maintaining vital public infrastructure.
