The capital of Cuba, Havana, was shaken by an earthquake

An earthquake struck near the western coast of Cuba, prompting reports of significant shaking across the island. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the seismic event registered a magnitude of 6.1.

Reporters from the Associated Press (AFP) in Havana reported that the tremors were powerful enough to cause sustained shaking, described as lasting approximately 20 seconds. The intensity of the quake forced residents to evacuate structures and move outdoors into the streets. Eyewitness accounts provided to the AFP detail the sudden onset of the shaking.

For instance, Carmelis Delgado, a 47-year-old economist, told reporters that initially, the sensation was unexpected. “At first, my head just went up in the air – I never thought it was an earthquake, I had never experienced it before,” Delgado stated, adding that once the nature of the event was realized, the local population quickly moved out of buildings. The Cuban government confirmed that the earthquake was felt across parts of the country.

The geological data indicates the epicenter was located roughly 100 kilometers from the western coast. The reports highlight the immediate impact of the seismic activity on daily life in areas surrounding Havana. The magnitude of the tremor prompted immediate concern regarding structural integrity and public safety across the affected region.
