A state funeral was held for K. D. Prunskienė on Wednesday, attended by numerous high-ranking officials.
Attendees included the Speaker of the Seimas, the Prime Minister, and various cabinet ministers. President Gitanas Nausėda was absent from the service as he was working remotely from Madeira. Former members of the Cabinet of Ministers also gathered to pay their respects to the former leader.
Rimantas Stankevičius, the deceased’s brother, explained the selection of the venue, noting that the St. John’s Church was chosen for the farewell ceremony due to its proximity to the family residence in Vilnius. Furthermore, he mentioned that K.
D. Prunskienė had studied at the nearby Vilnius University and subsequently taught at the institution. The schedule for the day involved several formal proceedings.
At noon, an Honor Guard was positioned by the coffin, preceding religious rites and the formal lining up of the guard. Following these ceremonies, at 1 p.m., a solemn procession was scheduled after the coffin was removed. The attendance of current and former political figures underscored the significance of the event for the nation.
The coordination of these final rites reflected the deep connection the community held for the individual, as evidenced by the gathering of their professional peers and family.
