A recent incident involving a job applicant and a real estate agent has come to light, raising questions about discriminatory practices in the rental market. The man, who was seeking to rent a flat, provided the agent with details regarding his financial standing, income, and his foreign nationality. According to the applicant, the real estate agent initially informed him that the flat was exclusively available to Lithuanian nationals, though the agent offered to speak with the owner regarding an exception.
Subsequently, the foreigner was asked to specify his nationality. Upon identifying himself as Persian, the agent reportedly stated that the flat had already been rented to another individual. During the subsequent investigation, the small company named “Patera” acknowledged that the statement restricting the flat’s tenancy to Lithuanians was inappropriate.
However, the company firmly denied that tenant selection was based on nationality or origin. Instead, Patera asserted that the final decision regarding the applicant rested solely with the owner of the property.
