The Supreme Court of Lithuania’s selection panel has issued rulings rejecting cassation appeals filed by Vygantas Jociaus, Petras Simavicius, and Aušrelė Šalkauskiene. All three individuals were previously found guilty of offenses related to corruption. Collectively, the appellants had sought the annulment of the judgments issued by the first and appellate courts, alongside the termination of their respective cases.
Following the rejection of these appeals, the individuals remain subject to the sentences previously imposed upon them. According to Tautavilė Merkevičiūtė, a representative from the LAT office for relations with the public, the final decisions rendered by the Supreme Court are conclusive and are not subject to further appeal. One of the appellants, A.
Šalkauskiene, had filed multiple appeals. Her complaints centered on alleged procedural irregularities within the court system. Specifically, she argued that the courts handling her case failed to adhere to established court practice, thereby infringing upon her rights to a fair trial and the proper handling of her case.
The ruling concerning the three individuals confirms the legal findings regarding the corruption charges. The rejection of their appeals solidifies the legal outcomes established at lower judicial levels, confirming the finality of the penalties associated with the underlying criminal proceedings.
