The insurers advise to put this small item in the suitcase: it can be very useful on the trip

Data from SITA indicates that the global average rate for lost suitcases is approximately six to seven lost suitcases for every 1,000 passengers. A regional comparison reveals significant variation in baggage handling efficiency. The Asia-Pacific region demonstrates the best performance, reporting an average rate of only three lost suitcases per 1,000 travelers.

Conversely, Europe currently registers the highest rate of lost suitcases, with the average number significantly exceeding the global mean. Artur Juodeikis, Director of the Claims Department at Lietuvos draudimas, attributes this disparity partly to the operational complexity of the continent’s travel infrastructure. He notes that large transit airports, such as London Heathrow, Frankfurt, Amsterdam, and Paris international airports, feature intricate passenger transfer schemes and very short intervals between connecting flights.

These demanding logistical conditions contribute to the higher incidence of lost suitcases observed in European travel hubs. While the global average sets a baseline, the regional data highlights that operational factors, particularly the density and speed of connections, are major determinants in the rate of lost baggage across different geographical areas.
