The Linkuva tragedy: Lithuanian ship mysteriously disappears with 18 people

The ship “Linkuva,” operated by Klaipėda Transport Fleet, went missing in the ocean while located approximately 220 nautical miles from the Mexican port of Acapulco. The vessel encountered severe weather conditions due to the presence of Tropical Hurricane “Carllota.” Onboard the ship were 18 crew members, all Lithuanian citizens, traveling from Japan to the USA. The Linkuva was commanded by Captain Anatolijus Bobrovas, a 50-year-old resident of Klaipėda.

The vessel became trapped within the hurricane’s path, facing risks from high waves and winds estimated between 60 and 70 meters per second. The crew managed to transmit their location, wind speed data, and requested guidance on safely exiting the tropical storm zone. Subsequently, the crew reported a failure in the ship’s engine.

As conditions worsened, the wind increased to 40 meters per second, rendering the vessel uncontrollable. Following these developments, communication with the Linkuva was lost. The incident highlights the extreme operational hazards faced by the lithuanian crew while navigating the volatile conditions associated with the tropical system.
