A Lithuanian national was detained at the Luang Prabang International Airport following an attempt to smuggle narcotics into Vietnam. Authorities reported that the individual, identified as 46-year-old Kestutis, was apprehended on July 11th during a joint law enforcement operation. The operation was a collaborative effort involving local Luang Prabang police, officers from the Vietnamese Public Security Ministry’s Anti-Narcotics Division, and other Vietnamese law enforcement representatives stationed in Laos.
During preliminary hearings, the detained individual admitted to smuggling the illicit substances from Luang Prabang to Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam. The authorities confirmed that the contraband consisted of a significant amount of heroin, totaling approximately 15 kilograms. Law enforcement sources stated that the drugs were intended for distribution upon arrival in Vietnam.
The incident highlights the ongoing cross-border efforts to combat trafficking in the region. Vietnamese and Lao law enforcement agencies have since launched a joint investigation into the matter. The detention underscores the cooperation between the two nations’ security forces in monitoring and interdicting illegal drug shipments.
The focus remains on the continuation of the joint inquiry to determine the full scope of the smuggling network involved.
