On Sunday morning, Varėna Border Patrol officers conducted a stop on a Volkswagen Crafter truck near the border checkpoint in Švendubrės village, located within the Druskininkai district. The vehicle was being operated by a 45-year-old resident of the Vilnius district, accompanied by a 30-year-old individual also from Vilnius. The truck was identified as a rented van bearing Lithuanian registration plates.
During the inspection, authorities observed four distinct bundles wrapped in black polyethylene film. Upon examination, officers noted that one of these bundles contained miscellaneous items, specifically remnants of an air balloon and approximately 30 centimeters of gray plastic piping. The primary contents of the bundles were identified as three cardboard boxes.
These boxes were marked with the corporate logo of the Gardin tobacco factory, which is based in Belarus. The stop occurred at a critical point along the border crossing, prompting the detailed inspection by the Lithuanian border authorities. The presence of goods linked to a foreign tobacco manufacturer, combined with the unusual items discovered within the wrapping, led to the detailed documentation of the cargo.
The incident highlights routine border security procedures implemented by the Varėna unit when monitoring transit through the region adjacent to Vilnius.
