The Seimas unanimously approved amendments to the Education Act on Thursday, passing the changes with the support of all 96 members of parliament. These revisions introduce significant structural changes to the national education framework, particularly concerning daily student study limits and teacher professional standards. A key modification addresses the determination of maximum daily study hours for students across various age groups.

Under the new regulations, these limits will henceforth be established based on General Education Plans approved by the Minister of Education, Science and Sports. This marks a departure from the previous system, which utilized guidelines set by the Minister of Health’s Hygiene Standard. Furthermore, the Seimas mandated that all teaching personnel working within vocational schools must attain recognized pedagogical qualifications.

The adopted amendments establish a clear timeline for professional development: any teacher, regardless of their current profession, who does not possess pedagogical qualifications will be required to obtain the necessary certification within four years of commencing employment. These legislative actions aim to standardize and elevate the quality of the education provided nationwide. By centralizing the determination of educational loads under the purview of the relevant minister and linking professional development directly to pedagogical expertise, the changes seek to strengthen the alignment between academic curricula and the broader goals of science and workforce development.
