The study: one in two Lithuanians use social networks daily for news – but only 15% trust them

Lithuanian citizens utilize multiple channels for their daily news consumption, with the data indicating an average of four sources used per day. Among these sources, social networks are the most frequently cited, used by 75% of respondents. This is followed by Lithuanian television channels at 56% and internet portals at 49%, while print media is reported as the least utilized source.

However, a distinct divergence exists between usage frequency and perceived reliability. Traditional media outlets, including television, radio, and established internet portals, maintain a higher degree of trust among the public compared to purely digital platforms. Trust in social networks, for example, is reported by only 15% of respondents, with TikTok cited by just 5%.

Furthermore, a significant 65% of users do not actively trust these digital platforms for news. This disparity establishes a clear paradox: the most frequently accessed news channels are concurrently the least trusted sources. Interestingly, the research noted that trust levels do not appear to correlate strongly with age.

The younger generation demonstrated trust in traditional media that is comparable to that of older demographics. This pattern suggests that while digital platforms dominate daily usage statistics, established media sources retain a measurable advantage in terms of public confidence.
