Early Thursday evening, authorities from the VSAT Vilnius Border Guard Detachment Criminal Intelligence Department reported an incident involving the interception of a vehicle in Zarasai. Officers from the Zarasai-Bradesiai-Obeliai police detachment stopped a car, identified as a VW Touran, which was registered with Lithuanian plates. The vehicle was being operated by a 42-year-old Moldovan citizen.
Inside the vehicle were several young passengers who were found to be without any identification or citizenship documentation. The individuals reportedly introduced themselves as Sudanese nationals, with reported ages ranging between 17 and 25 years old. Following the stop, the driver was taken into custody and transported to the police station.
The passengers were temporarily housed at facilities managed by the Vilnius Border Guard Detachment. In connection with the incident, the VSAT Vilnius Border Guard Detachment has initiated a pre-trial investigation. This investigation is focused on allegations of the unlawful transportation of persons across a state border for personal gain.
The official reports confirm that the detention and subsequent investigation are proceeding under these grounds of border violation and human smuggling.
