The World Cup is not broadcasted by LRT – why? For the first time in 20 years, it will not show any matches

LRT has maintained continuous broadcasting coverage of the world’s major football championships since 2006. However, the national broadcaster’s channel is currently experiencing a break in coverage, marking the first time in two decades that LRT will not air matches from the global tournaments. Ramūnas Grumbinas, the director of the LRT sports project, addressed the scheduling gap, explaining the current situation.

He highlighted LRT’s potential involvement in future major events, specifically mentioning the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Grumbinas indicated that LRT possesses the capability to broadcast a substantial portion of the tournament to Lithuanian viewers. According to the director, coverage could potentially include around 38 out of 104 matches, encompassing crucial stages such as the knockout rounds and the final match.

This current hiatus represents a deviation from LRT’s long-standing commitment to covering the world stage of football. While the broadcaster has historically been a reliable source for global sporting action, the scheduling changes mean that viewers will not see coverage of the latest world championships at this time. The focus remains on positioning LRT for future major international sporting rights, ensuring continued engagement with world-class football events moving forward.

  1. It’s really disappointing that LRT won’t be broadcasting the World Cup matches this year.
