The young man who stole 70 thousand euros from the rectory has so far managed to avoid prison

Marius Balčiūnas, an individual previously employed at the farm before his role with the priest, was implicated in a theft from the Smilgių St. George’s Parish. According to case data, Balčiūnas broke into the parish rectory on December 7, 2025, and stole valuable items belonging to the parish and the priest.

The stolen funds were discovered in the working room of the rectory, specifically within drawers and a locked safe. The total amount stolen included approximately 58,700 euros and 2,700 US dollars, attributed to the parish and the priest, alongside an additional 5,900 euros belonging solely to the parish. While the majority of the misappropriated funds were recovered and seized during subsequent searches, the court determined that an amount exceeding 2,100 euros had been spent.

Balčiūnas admitted to the theft. He expressed remorse for his actions and committed to returning the stolen money. Furthermore, he pledged to reimburse the funds that were spent.
