Thousands of residents pay for electricity: here’s what you need to do to save money

Data released by the Ministry of Energy indicates a notable disparity in residential energy costs. The vice-minister stated on Tuesday that, according to the ministry’s data, the average consumer pays between three and nine euros more monthly for electricity compared to the established public tariff, with some instances showing even greater discrepancies. The Ministry’s proposal is scheduled for consideration by Parliament later that day.

This proposal mandates that independent electricity suppliers must terminate fixed contracts with vulnerable consumers if the prevailing public electricity price decreases. The public electricity tariff is currently reserved for specific groups, including individuals receiving social support, persons with disabilities, and residents whose annual electricity consumption falls below 1,000 kilowatt-hours (kWh). Regarding future costs, the vice-minister also addressed the trajectory of utility prices.

She indicated that both the public electricity and gas rates are expected to rise in the near future. These statements provide insight into the current structure of energy pricing and potential regulatory changes affecting consumer rates. The Ministry’s figures underscore the current financial gap between general market rates and the subsidized public tariffs for vulnerable populations.
