According to agricultural expert Loreta Aleknavičienė, an agronomist consultant with Viva Fertilis, traditional methods involving organic waste can be effective ways to improve soil health and help plants thrive. She confirmed that materials such as banana peels are beneficial additions when used to fertilize gardens. Aleknavičienė explained that banana peels serve as excellent organic matter.
When incorporated into the soil, they do more than simply release nutrients; they also function as a food source for beneficial bacteria, which consequently helps increase the soil’s humus content. However, the agronomist cautioned against a common error: gardeners should not bury the entire peel or chop it into large, intact pieces, as this practice can inadvertently attract rodents and other pests. For optimal results, the expert advises that bananas are particularly useful for vegetable cultivation due to their potassium content.
To apply this benefit, it is most effective to chop the peels into small fragments. These pieces can then be used to create a diluted liquid, which should be used to water plants over a period of two to three days. Furthermore, Aleknavičienė recommends that the most sustainable method for utilizing these materials is to place them directly into a composting bin, allowing natural decomposition to manage the nutrients safely.
