Tragedy in Šilutė: a 42-year-old man who saved his friend from drowning in the lake died (6)

An incident occurred on July 17th during the day near the Saugai settlement in a public lakeside recreation area. Two couples were reportedly enjoying the area when one couple went swimming nearby. Upon their return, they discovered a friend crying in the recreation space, appearing wet.

The woman stated that she had also gone swimming and began to drown. A 42-year-old friend entered the water to attempt a rescue. The man successfully pulled the woman out, and she survived.

However, the rescuer subsequently drowned. These events are part of a pattern of water-related incidents reported in the region. Statistics for the first half of the year indicate that 191 lives were saved through fire and rescue work in Grigiškės.

Separately, other incidents included a man drowning in a lake within the Lazdijų district, and the recovery of an old woman’s body from a lake in the same district. In one instance, emergency services were called after reports of a person drowning in the lake. The recurring nature of these events highlights ongoing risks associated with recreational water use.

The survival of the initial friend underscores the immediate danger, while the subsequent drowning of the rescuer underscores the inherent risks involved in such rescues. Authorities continue to monitor the situation, emphasizing safety precautions for the public, especially when near natural bodies of water.
